Course Placement Policy

Incoming students: beginning of year placement

Returning IDEA Math student intending to join session 1 of an academic year program will be placed into the most appropriate class per the recommendation given by his most recent IDEA Math instructor. For questions regarding course placement recommendations, please contact info@ideamath.org.

New applicants who wishes to apply for session 1 of an academic year program should create an account, and submit information online in his account about his mathematical background.

There is an application fee of $30 for each applicant. Please mail the check payable to IDEA MATH to

IDEA MATH
P.O. Box 338
Exeter, NH 03833

Applicant shall contact the IDEA Math staff at info@ideamath.org for information on which placement test to take. After receiving a recommendation, the applicant should complete the test INDEPENDENTLY and in a timely fashion, and submit his work via email to info@ideamath.org. After reviewing applicant’s work in detail, the IDEA Math staff will provide both feedback and course placement and registration information.

Incoming students: mid-year placement

A student seeking to join IDEA Math for session 2, 3, or 4 of an academic year program without having been enrolled the previous session should create an account (returning student should use his original account), submit information about his mathematical background, and then contact the IDEA Math staff at info@ideamath.org. The student will be asked to both submit his work on a certain set of materials and to take an on-site placement test. There is a testing fee of $50 that must be paid in cash before the test. After reviewing the applicant's work in detail, the IDEA Math staff will provide both feedback and course placement information; students with a score of 90% or above on the placement test will be permitted to enroll if there is space available in the intended course.

Current students

During the entirety of our program, our instructors are continuously and closely reviewing students' work and will contact the students and parents if a student is encountering difficulties in the program (particularly with regards to their mathematics, study skills, or general attitude).

Based on our knowledge of the student's work, it may be in the best interests of a student to realign his class assignment, whether during a session or between sessions. Consequently, instructors will make recommendations to the students and parents if necessary to ensure that each student is in the most appropriate class for him. In addition, if during any session of our program a student wishes to move between courses, the student should first contact the IDEA Math staff either in person or via email at info@ideamath.org; we will discuss the move with the instructors immediately.

If we agree that a move to a lower course is appropriate, then we will act immediately.

If a student has consistently turned in outstanding mathematical work and shown great leadership in class, our instructors will discuss with the student the possibility of moving him or her to a higher course. If the student is willing to give a try, he will go through the following process to ensure a smooth transition: obtain a few sets of additional materials from us, complete and submit the work on those materials to us. Only after a careful review of the student's work will we make a decision about the most appropriate place for him.

Contact IDEA MATH

As always, we welcome parents' specific academic questions about our curriculum and teaching styles, as well as students' class-work and preparation. Please email us your questions at info@ideamath.org.
